The 5 Best Outdoor Activities in Surrey

The Summer Holidays are upon us once more and all around Surrey, people are looking for stuff to do. Ideally outdoor activities to get the little munchkins (or even bigger munchkins) away from screens and absorbing some natural sunlight!

It’s not just for kids, of course. What about outdoor activities for those Surrey grown ups who are sick of being stuck indoors and just want to do something fun and exhilarating while getting some vitamin D!

Yes, it’s true that you can get some outdoor time in the local park… or local beer garden for that matter. But don’t forget that the good old British Summer is only with us for a fleeting time! So why not look for an activity that will really make some memories and get your pulse racing?

The all important question is what are the top 5 outdoor activities across Surrey that are really worth the excursion? And where are the best places to do it?

  1. Treeclimbing
Climbing a tree has come on leaps and bounds in recent years. With adventure set ups that cater for anyone as young as 6, a day out at a tree climbing activity is ideal for all. Safety is paramount so you can all have fun at height in confidence. But the challenge is enough to keep even the most agile of adults engaged. And don’t forget, you’re adventuring within the treetops so your skin will benefit from some protective shade during your activity!

WHERE? Check out Wildwood in Guildford for Surrey’s most varied range of thrilling treetop activity for all ages.

  1. Cycling
Off road cycling is a flexible way to enjoy the countryside either as an individual or in a social or family group. Here in Surrey we’re lucky enough to benefit from the Surrey Hills, an area of outstanding natural beauty. Not forgetting a bit of up and down hill adventure!

WHERE? To work out your own routes, the VisitSurrey website has maps and tips. Or you may prefer to book on a guided tour with Rocks & Road.

  1. Canoeing
To keep cool on a hot Summer’s day you may like to factor water into your activity. Canoeing is great for this – especially since you’re likely to get a dunking at some point in the session! Kayak clubs tend to offer school holiday courses so Summer is a great time to get the family skilled up!

WHERE? Surrey is home to some great waterways, including Hawley Lake, the River Way and the Basingstoke Canal.

  1. Horse Riding
Our equine friends may not be for everyone, but the Summer sunshine is a good time for kids to try out horse riding. There are ongoing skills to learn and riding techniques to perfect. This activity is a more technical and laid back day out, so suits those with a specific interest.

WHERE? Local clubs offer frequent introductory sessions for keen riders, and the Surrey Hills are a great place to start.

  1. Paintballing
For large groups and families looking for high octane fun, try outdoor paintballing activities. Of course, this activity works best if your whole group is enthusiastic about the pursuit. Surrey offers facilities for games in the forest so you can enjoy the great outdoors while you engage in conflict. For families with younger children, laser tag means less physical impact!

WHERE? Hookwood Forest hosts a variety of paintballing activities if your group is battle ready.

Surrey is amazingly well set up for outdoor activities, benefiting as it does from so many areas of woodland and natural surroundings. So if you fancy a treeclimbing adventure or any other outdoor activity, make the most of the great outdoors and have fun!
